The world continues to face challenges in sustainably producing fruit and vegetables to feed an ever-growing population. To meet demand in a deteriorating environment and amid climate change uncertainties, it is essential to establish sustainable horticultural production systems that follow an ecosystem approach, while considering social, political, economic and environmental impacts. Against this backdrop, FAO recognizes the need for transformative partnerships with non-state actors to develop capacities to deliver safe and nutritious foods for healthy diets for present and future generations, leaving no one behind.

In 2021, FAO and the International Horticultural Society of Science (ISHS) entered into partnership to strengthen horticulture knowledge and practices, aimed at ensuring efficient and sustainable consumption and production patterns, and contributing to resilient and sustainable agrifood systems in a changing climate and environment. Reflecting on the impact of their joint efforts, FAO  has published a partnership case study entitled “ Strengthening Horticulture-Based Food Systems for Sustainable Livelihoods and Food and Nutrition Security.”

The case study looks at key highlights of the partnership, including how it has leveraged  knowledge and experiences to develop country and regional capacities on horticulture science, as well as practices to advance sustainable production of fruits and vegetables. The work contributes to the FAO Four Betters (better production, better nutrition, a better environment and a better life) and the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda
