LEAP at the UN Climate Change Conference COP 25

03/12/2019

The UN Climate Change Conference COP 25 will be held from 2 to 13 December 2019 at IFEMA - Feria de Madrid, under the Presidency of the Government of Chile with the logistical support from the Government of Spain.

The Livestock Environmental Assessment and Performance (LEAP) Partnership will be part of the conference with an official side event on Thursday, 12 December, from 11:30 to 13:00, at Room 5. Entitled Approaches for Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). Low-carbon livestock to address climate change and food security, it will showcase how FAO LEAP guidelines can be used to improve measurements, reporting, and verification of greenhouse gas inventories for livestock production systems and to enhance Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).

Under the category Providing support to developing countries, this official side event aims to be a platform to exchange views with governments and other parties and boost tangible action for meeting the climate challenge through the FAO LEAP Partnership. The effect of government policies, sector strategies and farming practices on livestock production are key for the implementation mechanisms on climate action and the effective contribution to the Paris Agreement and the Sustainable Development Goals.

The importance of taking action on greenhouse emissions from agriculture was acknowledged at the last FAO LEAP Plenary Meeting in October 2019. FAO and its partners called on countries that have included agriculture in their NDCs to join the Partnership. FAO LEAP guidelines and tools are essential to accelerate the sustainable development and contribute to enhance national inventories of greenhouse gas emissions for improved national inventories and for evidence-based action for food security and low-carbon livestock.

The LEAP side event will be webcast live and available to view on demand through this link.
