GASL Women leaders contest 2026
The 14th GASL Multistakeholder Partnership (MSP) Meeting is going to take place in Dakar, Senegal, starting on Monday 8th June until Thursday 11th June.
Further details on the venue and the agenda of the 4-days event will be coming soon.
In the meantime register your interest in taking part! The Secretariat will then get in touch to confirm your participation.
The MSP Meeting 2026 will serve as a global, regional and national platform for dialogue, knowledge exchange and coordinated action on sustainable livestock transformation and One Health. It is strategically aligned with the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists (IYRP), the International Year of the Woman Farmer (IYWF), and follow-up actions to the International Year of Camelids 2024 (IYC 2024).
The MSP will build momentum for policy-relevant engagement, innovation, and investment-oriented discussions while strengthening GASL’s contribution to global policy processes.
Sustainable livestock development sits at the intersection of multiple global and regional megatrends that are especially visible in Senegal, West Africa and the wider Sahel. Climate change, rapid population growth, urbanisation, and shifting food demand are increasing pressure on land, water, and rangelands, while land degradation and climate variability threaten the resilience of pastoral and agropastoral systems. At the same time, livestock remains a cornerstone of food security, nutrition, livelihoods, and cultural identity, with particular importance for vulnerable groups such as pregnant women and young children, for whom access to animal-source foods is critical to improved nutrition and health outcomes.
These dynamics create both significant risks and major opportunities, underscoring the need for locally adapted, inclusive solutions. Context-specific approaches - such as producer organisations and cooperatives- can strengthen value chains, improve market access, and ensure that smallholders and pastoralists benefit from sector development. Women play a growing and essential role across livestock systems, yet empowering them through better access to resources, services, and decision-making remains a key lever for sustainability and equity. Livestock also offers a major opportunity to create decent employment for youth, from production and processing to rangeland management and service provision, helping address rural unemployment. Efforts to restore and protect rangelands, including through initiatives like the Great Green Wall, are central to combating land degradation and building climate resilience.
In this context, the GASL Multistakeholder Partnership Meeting provides a vital platform to align global ambitions with local realities and to scale solutions that support resilient ecosystems, inclusive livelihoods, and improved nutrition.
