GASL holds consultation on FAO Global Plan of Action for Sustainable Livestock Transformation
On March 26, the Global Agenda for Sustainable Livestock (GASL) held a significant consultation with all its Partners, to present and gain first feedback on the draft version of the FAO Global Plan of Action for Sustainable Livestock Transformation (GPA).
The GPA is a policy framework developed by FAO for the Committee on Agriculture (COAG) Sub-Committee on Livestock. During its Second Session in July 2024, the Sub-Committee recommended FAO, in consultation with its Members, to developed a negotiated Global Plan of Action for Sustainable Livestock Transformation. The purpose of this plan is, among others, to implement the Sustainable Livestock Transformation Framework.
The consultation brought together a diverse array of representatives from many different sectors, including social movements, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), academic and research institutions and private sector bodies, each contributing their unique perspectives and expertise to the conversation.
The central discussion focussed on reviewing and providing input to the main priority areas, the strategic priorities and the actions listed in the draft version of the GPA.
Additionally, in view of the new GASL Action Plan 2026-2028, it was also asked to all partners to suggest how they would like to see GASL contribute to the Global Plan of Action, and what they would like to prioritise.
Partners are invited to submit their written inputs, whether they are comments on the document or general feedback, to the GASL Secretariat at [email protected] by the 22 April 2025.
The consultation demonstrated the importance of multi-sectoral collaboration in addressing the complex challenges facing the livestock sector. The diverse inputs from various representatives, the high level of engagement and the broad participation showed the importance of an holistic and integrated approach to sustainable livestock management. The event also underscored the need for continued dialogue and cooperation to achieve the shared goals of sustainability and resilience in the livestock sector.
