The Climate Action and Just Transition (APACTJ) Alliance launches at PARLATINO headquarters

05/06/2025 -

At PARLATINO headquarters, climate action was on centre stage when parliamentary representatives gathered recently for a political dialogue on “Parliaments in Climate Action and the Just Transition”. The event also marked the launch of the Parliamentary Alliance for Climate Action and Just Transition (APACTJ) – a group uniting parliamentary representatives from Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, Asia and Europe to strengthen interparliamentary cooperation on climate issues.

With FAO’s participation sharpening the Alliance’s commitment to integrating sustainable agriculture, food security and agrifood systems transformation in the global climate agenda, the event highlighted the need for legislative frameworks that promote resilient food systems, support smallholder farmers and ensure inclusive, equitable climate policies – especially for Indigenous Peoples, women and marginalized communities.

The Final Declaration of the Alliance emphasized the vital role of parliaments in combating hunger and malnutrition through sustainable, climate-resilient agriculture, with particular reference made to the 2023 Global Parliamentary Pact against Hunger and Malnutrition. As anticipation builds for COP30 in Brazil, the Alliance members urged parliamentary actors to leverage their collective efforts towards the alignment of climate goals with food security objectives, fostering a sustainable and inclusive transition. Members stressed the importance of being recognized as key stakeholders for COP meetings, ensuring that their voices and contributions are integral to shaping effective and inclusive climate policies.

FAO continues to support policymakers and parliamentarians worldwide in translating commitments into effective policies to address the interconnected challenges of climate change, hunger and malnutrition. As a strategic partner, FAO aims to strengthen parliamentary capacities in areas such as representation, oversight, legislation and the harmonization of legal frameworks. Through the empowerment of parliaments and the support for alliances such as APACTJ, FAO promotes a more coordinated and effective approach to building sustainable, inclusive solutions for food security and climate resilience.
