Traditionally, dryland forests and trees in pastoral landscapes have played a critical role in coping with climate variability, particularly in terms of food security and nutrition for local communities.  However, traditional and formal tenure rights for trees in agricultural landscapes or the use of nearby forests may differ and vary to a high degree. Tenure may include traditional collection of various fruits and other NTFPs, but more seldom include the use of timber or even the selling of charcoal. The latter hinders efforts to transform land-use systems to give local communities rights and power to manage their natural resources.

What are the examples of successfully securing right in the dryland forest region? Are there any inconsistences between legal and local recognitions of right for different land user in dryland forest? What options are available there for reconciling the different view and improve the integrated management of forest and livestock?

How best to secure land tenure for pastoralists is an ongoing challenge for governments, practitioners, lawyers, academics, and communities themselves. As a result, pastoral lands continue to be encroached, divided, and lost whilst mobility of people and livestock is blocked. This webinar describes innovations, successful practices and lessons learned from the presenter’s 15-year work on pastoral land tenure and governance. It mainly focuses on how research and technical support to governments, if used as an entry point can lead to policy impacting results.

Change is coming to the traditional way of life of Mongolia’s livestock herders. And with it comes additional risks to their economic and food security. The problem is what’s known as a dzud – a summer of very high temperatures and little rainfall followed by the harshest of winters. FAO’s Early Warning Early Action system had started to pick up dzud warning signs in the autumn of 2017. This video showcases describes this approach implemented by FAO to mitigate the impact of the 2017/18 localized dzud on vulnerable herders.

Peste des petits ruminants (PPR) is a deadly, fast spreading viral disease that kills 90% of the animals it infects. This affects 300 million families across Africa, Middle East, Turkey and Asia, pushing them into poverty and food insecurity. But PPR is easily diagnosed and can be prevented with a reliable and affordable vaccine that provides lifelong immunity from the disease.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the World Organization for Animal Health (OiE) have been working with communities and governments around the world on a global strategy to end PPR and move a step closer to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. This video aims to create awareness about the disease as a step towards its control and complete eradication by 2030.
