Insights into FAO’s work on antimicrobial use in plant health

To engage with World AMR Awareness Week (WAAW), the Pest and Pesticide Management Team (NSPCD) organized a presentation within the NSP Divisional Seminar Series. The seminar, titled “Antimicrobial Use and Resistance in Plant Health: A One Health Perspective,” was delivered by Marie Verhaegen, FAO consultant specialized in antimicrobial use (AMU) and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in plant health. The event started with opening remarks from Ms. Kim-Anh Tempelman, Project Coordinator, and Mr. Baogen Gu, NSPCD Team Leader.
The seminar highlighted the interconnectedness of plant, animal and human health when speaking about AMR, and also outlined the FAO Action Plan on AMR (2021–2025).
During the presentation, the need for data collection on AMU in plant production and protection was emphasized. Key priorities, ongoing activities as well as the progress made by FAO in this area were described. The seminar sparked interesting discussions with colleagues regarding the type of data available and the importance of promoting alternative solutions.
Marie Verhaegen mentioned: “It is essential to adopt a cross-sectoral approach to achieve integrated solutions and results. FAO remains committed to supporting alternative and sustainable plant disease management strategies, aiming at substantially reducing reliance on antimicrobial pesticides and mitigating the risks of resistance.”
Every year, the WAAW takes place from 18 to 24 November. This year’s theme was “Educate. Advocate. Act Now.”, underscoring the urgency of addressing AMU and AMR through proactive and coordinated global efforts.
