Working group on Product Chemistry

From 5 – 7 September 2016, FAO hosted a working group on pesticide product chemistry. Any new pesticide product proposed for registration in a country needs to be evaluated for its composition and physico-chemical characteristics in order to ensure that it meets specifications and is composed of active ingredients and co-formulants with a known risk profile. This evaluation requires specialized chemistry skills that might not be available to low-resource registration authorities in developing countries. The working group consisted of 7 international experts and regulators who met at FAO headquarters in Rome, assisted by 3 other experts joining the meeting remotely. They discussed product chemistry evaluation and identified methods that can be applied by registration authorities with limited resources. Their recommendations will be incorporated in the FAO Pesticide Registration Toolkit.
