Launch of the new Crop Calendar

FAO’s Crop Calendar is a tool that provides information on sowing and harvesting seasons as well as the associated agronomic practices of the crops cultivated in specific agroecological zones, available in a user-friendly way to a wide audience. The event will showcase this tool, its development and its integration into FAO’s Hand in Hand Geospatial Platform (HiH – a web-based tool) and the Digital Services Portfolio (DSP – a mobile application).
Objective
The side event showcased the updated Crop Calendar, its linkages with existing information systems within FAO and the role it plays in planning and decision making with regard to planting and harvesting. The event illustrated the importance of information on planting periods and seed requirements of the major food security crops in the different agroecological zones of the world, including their main agronomic characteristics and adaptation to agroecological conditions, available in a user-friendly way to a wide audience.

The programme is being held as a side event at the Tenth Session of the Governing Body of the International Treaty of Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture 20-24 November 2023 in FAO, Rome.
