At the Global Technical Recognition Ceremony, FAO recognized institutions and organizations whose work exemplifies the Organization’s technical leadership and long-standing commitment to sustainable agrifood systems.

Sustainable plant production and protection was one of the six categories of this technical recognition. Of the nearly 300 nominations received from around the world for the category, 39 were selected for their innovative contributions to the transformation of cropping systems over the last four decades.

The IPPC ePhyto Solution, a innovative sysmte to digitise and secure the trade in plants and plant products, showcased in a FAO-IPPC-led session at the World Trade Organization Public Forum, is replacing outdated paper-based phytosanitary certificates, breaking down trade barriers to ensure faster, more efficient, and profitable trade and potentially saving businesses in 96 countries about USD 80 million annually.

A high-level webinar, hosted by FAO on 10 September 2025, focused on how  seed systems in Mozambique have been improved over the past decade, increasing the quality of seeds produced by smallholder farmers in support of sustainable crop production systems. The Government of Mozambique and FAO, leveraging generous funding by the European Union, have worked with partners to accelerate the development and adoption of superior crop varieties, expand quality seed production and support farmer organizations and institutions.

For Cambodia, choosing mango as its priority product under OCOP highlights both the fruit's economic promise and its cultural importance.

Once grown mainly for family consumption, the potato is now a symbol of national transformation. Choosing this tuber as its priority product, Lesotho joined the FAO OCOP initiative, strengthening the potato value chain — from seeds to sales. For Lesotho, the potato is no longer just a staple. It’s a catalyst — for women’s empowerment, youth employment and a more resilient rural future.

FAO has launched a new webinar series designed to integrate Sustainable Agricultural Mechanization (SAM) into Farmer Field Schools (FFS), targeting small-scale producers worldwide. This initiative comes at a time when smallholder farmers face increasing productivity challenges, centred around climate-related shocks, limited access to technology and outdated vocational training.
