World Pulses Day has been observed every year since 2018 when the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) designated 10 February as its official date. FAO is the lead UN agency facilitating the observance of the World Pulses Day, in collaboration with other relevant organizations. For the first time, the celebration will take place outside FAO Headquarters. This year the global celebration will be held at the MIDAGRI headquarters in Lima, Peru.
Pulses play a key role in transforming agrifood systems by promoting sustainability, nutrition and agricultural productivity while supporting people’s livelihoods. Their natural ability to fix nitrogen and sequester soil carbon improves soil fertility and health, reducing the need for agricultural inputs and lowering environmental impact. As a nutrient-dense, affordable protein source, pulses contribute to food security and support healthier diets worldwide. They also support farmers’ livelihoods by providing economic opportunities and boosting productivity through diversified cropping systems.
The global celebration will take place on 10 February 2025, with the theme: “Pulses: Bringing diversity to agrifood systems”. It will be opened by His Excellency Ángel Manuel Manero Campos, Minister for Agricultural Development and Irrigation; Yurdi Yasmi, Director of the FAO Plant Production and Protection Division; and other dignitaries.
“Each of us can play a key role in boosting the sustainable production and consumption of pulses. The celebration this year is special and historical as it is for the first time we celebrate it outside Rome. I am thankful to the Government of Peru for its leadership in this year celebration,” said Yasmi.
The celebration will include a high-level ceremony, an exhibition and a gastronomic presentation featuring tarwi, a native pulse from Peru. It will be followed by an interactive technical dialogue with an introduction by the Vice-Minister Iván Ramos Pastor. The panelists will discuss how pulses contribute to the diversity and sustainability of agrifood systems, and it will be moderated by Teodardo Calles, Agricultural Officer at FAO, and feature the participation of:
- Cecilia Baginsky, Associate Professor of the University of Chile
- Carol Abanto, Corporate Director for Research and Development of DANPER
- Julio Francisco Castillo, Founder of Allpa Cuna Foundation
- Juan José González, Research Coordinator of the Alliance Bioversity & the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT).
