Collaborating for Conservation

Dijon, France, 10 March 2025 – The Secretariat of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (International Treaty) participated in the Technical Meeting on Genetic Resources and Vine Selection (GENET) organized by the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV) in Dijon, France.

The participation of the Secretariat of the International Treaty at the GENET meeting is the first tangible activity started under the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the two Organizations in 2024,”  said Mario Marino, Technical Officer of the International Treaty. “We look forward to working together with the OIV in the years to come,” he added.

This spirit of collaboration was also highlighted in his presentation, “The Relevance of the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Vitis,” in which he highlighted, among other, the opportunity to include the crops in Annex I of the International Treaty to facilitate access to the genetic material conserved around the world.

During the meeting, a presentation on the Global Information System (GLIS) and the application of Digital Object Identifiers to plant genetic resources for food and agriculture was delivered by Marco Marsella, International Treaty Operations Specialist, GLIS.

Through the MoU signed last year, the International Treaty and OIV will work together over the next five years (2025-2029), supporting capacity building and knowledge exchange activities.
