ITPGRFA Secretary Inspects on-site Arrangements for the Eleventh Session

Rome, Italy, 27 October 2025 – The Secretary of the International Treaty, Kent Nnadozie, conducted an official visit to Lima to assess the on-site arrangements for the Eleventh Session of the Governing Body (GB-11), scheduled to take place in Lima, Peru, from 24 to 29 November 2025, and held discussions with representatives of the co-hosting governments of Peru and Switzerland on the progress of the Session’s arrangements.

Secretary Nnadozie met with Peru’s new Minister of Agriculture, H.E. Vladimir Cuno, and Switzerland’s Ambassador to Peru, H.E. Paul Garnier, to review preparations for GB-11. He also met with the national organizing committee to discuss arrangements for both the Session and its High-level Segment. His visit included an on-site inspection of the Lima Convention Center, the venue for the Session, consultations with local conference service providers and logistics teams.

“Following an on-site assessment of the venue and related facilities, we can confirm that logistical arrangements are well underway,” said Kent Nnadozie, Secretary of the International Treaty. “The situation in Lima remains calm and conducive to the successful conduct of the Session. The emergency measures recently introduced by the Government of Peru are precautionary and intended to strengthen public security,” he added.

Minister Cuno reiterated the Peruvian Government’s full commitment to the successful organization of GB-11. The Secretariat, in close collaboration with the Governments of Peru and Switzerland, will continue to monitor developments and maintain close coordination with national authorities to ensure the safety, well-being and comfort of all participants.

The discussions in Lima also addressed the global challenges facing agricultural biodiversity. Minister Cuno and Ambassador Garnier emphasized the importance of supporting multilateral efforts to help plant breeders and farmers conserve and use plant genetic resources, develop new varieties, and ensuring equitable sharing of benefits.

“The collective commitment to the objectives of the International Treaty and to the success of this Governing Body Session remains the best assurance of its productive outcome,” Secretary Nnadozie said.

This will mark the first time the Governing Body meets in Latin America, and also the first co-hosted Session in the Treaty’s history. GB-11 will be preceded by two days of regional and inter-regional consultations, and a High-Level Segment that will take place midweek.
