Concerted efforts at national level are needed to effectively reduce food loss and waste (FLW) from production to consumption and achieve interrelated objectives of increasing the efficiency of the food system, making better use of natural resources, increasing the agriculture sector’s contribution to economic growth and stability. Furthermore, national strategies and action plans should reflect the levels and gaps in combating FLW, socio-economic context, and availability of natural and other resources. But in the spirit of SDG 12.3, we need to measure what we manage and this starts with baseline data. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has taken steps to set their national food loss and waste baseline, in support of a national FLW programme led by the Saudi Grains Organization. This dialogue will be an opportunity to exchange knowledge, experience and lessons with SAGO, FAO and UNEP in building a national FLW programme.
