Webminar Series: Post-Harvest Storage Losses are easily solved - Even for Smallholder Farmers

Virtual Event, 16/02/2016 - 17/02/2016

Webminar - "seed system" organizes two webinars by Dr. Dieudonne Baributsa, Purdue University

#1 on the hermetic technology : This webinar will discuss hermetic technologies for seed as well as grain storage. Hermetic technologies are airtight chemical-free storage methods. This presentation wil focus on experiences from more than 20 developing countries, particularly in Africa and Asia. The discussion will be centered on how insects and other pests and pathogens are controlled or mitigated without the use of chemicals. Hermetic storage is effective in limiting insect damage and preserving quality of most cereal and legume grains.

#2 the supply chain for the technology : This presentation will discuss progress in disseminating hermetic bags for grain and seed storage. It will cover the need to engage the development partners and government agencies in scaling-up innovations to create awareness and build the demand, especially with thousands of farmers. The need for a partnership with the private sector to scale-up innovations to ensure sustainability will be discussed. Supply chain development by the private is key to improve availability and increase adoption among farmers in rural areas. How exactly does one create market and stimulate supply chain for a totally new product to reduce on-farm storage losses? in even ‘challenging business environments’?
