Research suggests that 40% of food produced in the U.S. is lost or wasted, while approximately one in eight households experiences food insecurity. The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated the situation, creating uncertainty at the retail level of the food supply chain, potentially altering food shopping and inventory management practices. But with 35% of food going unsold or uneaten in 2019 – and data showing that COVID-19 has  potentially led to an increase in food waste, at least in the short term – a massive acceleration in effort is needed to reach the nation's goal to cut food waste in half by 2030. Google is building two new tools to help tackle food waste and hunger.
