Institutional food procurement programme (IFPPs) refers to initiatives that are designed to link demand for food from institutions such as school, hospitals and school feeding programmes to broader development objectives. In developing countries, IFPPs are increasingly viewed as approaches that facilitate the integration of small farmers into formal food systems. In the context of Agenda 2030, food security, nutrition and sustainable agriculture are essential not only for achieving Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 2, but also for the broad set of SDGs.  The Rome-based Agencies (RBAs) - including FAO, IFAD and WFP and Bioversity International - set up a working group in 2015 on nutrition-sensitive value chains, acting also as a platform for knowledge sharing and partnership development.  This brief aims to disseminate the activities undertaken and the way forward of the RBAs working group on sustainable food value chains for nutrition.

This discussion aims to gather the approaches and strategies used in SIDS to adapt to climate change, while building resilience of the most poor and vulnerable. These guidelines are primarily directed towards decision-makers responsible for integrating the goals and targets of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development into national policies and programmes. They will be of value to public and private actors, including investors, researchers and technical practitioners, involved in the broad area of food and agriculture, and rural development. Complementing FAO’s Common Vision for Sustainable Food and Agriculture and its five principles, this publication presents 20 practical and interconnected actions with the aim of transforming food and agriculture and driving achievement across the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Since 2008, FAO has been at the forefront of efforts to measure resilience to food insecurity and has pioneered the development and use of the Resilience Index Measurement and Analysis (RIMA) to understand the capacity of households to react to shocks. RIMA identifies vulnerable households and analyzes the underlying factors that contribute to their low resilience, while supporting decision-makers to develop evidence-based programs and policies to improve their resilience.
