Mountain agriculture. Opportunities for harnessing Zero Hunger in Asia

Why does mountain agriculture deserve special attention in a Zero Hunger context? Firstly, because hunger remains common in many mountainous areas. While on a global scale, food insecurity has tended to go down, mountain dwellers have fared worse than people living in plains. The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World 2019 is an important measure of global progress towards the Sustainable Development Goal of Zero Hunger. It gives an updated estimate of the number of hungry people in the world, including regional and national breakdowns, and the latest data on child stunting and wasting as well as on adult and child obesity. Launched in 2014, the Community of Practice on Food Loss Reduction is an information-sharing and peer-assistance forum aimed at reducing food loss. It aims to understand better how and if FLW reduction affects people’s nutritional status, and how reduced FLW and related micronutrient losses lead to improving food security and human nutrition.

An online repository of National Food-based Dietary Guidelines for experts and FAO staff working on public food and nutrition, health and agricultural policies, and nutrition education programmes to foster healthy eating habits and lifestyles. The online platform also provides a vast array of examples for countries that need to develop or update their national food-based dietary guidelines.

This platform provides free access to latest data on individual food consumption based on national and small-scale surveys, as well as a variety of indicators. It aims to help policy makers and program planners in making informed decisions for better nutrition and food safety.

Earth Observation — Global Information and Early Warning System (GIEWS)

The software programme for calculating the Agricultural Stress Index (ASI) was developed by the Flemish Institute for Technological Research (VITO) based on a methodology proposed by FAO CBC. VITO also developed the processing chains used to generate the ASI and other quick-look maps available on the online tool. EST-GIEWS is responsible for the global operation of the processing chain.

Youth Agri-Food Policy Assistance

More than 70 million young people are unemployed worldwide and 160 million young workers are living in poverty. Rural youth and women, in particular, face significant obstacles in obtaining quality education and training. Many depend on agriculture for their livelihoods and face severe constraints without access to land, credit or markets. FAO has designed an integrated country approach to work with governments to design youth-inclusive agri-food development policies. Through capacity building, entrepreneurial support and investment promotion, countries can increase job opportunities in the agri-food system, boosting youth employment and ensuring a high-quality agricultural workforce.
