Guidance note. Child labour in agriculture in protracted crises, fragile and humanitarian contexts

This note provides technical and operational guidance to stakeholders of the agriculture, food security and nutrition sector intervening in protracted crises, fragile and humanitarian contexts to ensure that children are not engaged in activities that could negatively affect their health, development or education, and are not employed in hazardous working conditions. It presents the basis to understand that agriculture, food security and nutrition programming in the aftermath of a crisis have po tentially both positive and negative effects on children. It also provides recommendations and concrete examples to address situations of child labour in agriculture in these contexts.

Pesticide management and child labour prevention

Children are exposed to pesticides through their work or involvement in agricultural activities, which can harm their health and development. This course explains how children are exposed, why children are more vulnerable than adults to exposure and the negative impacts. Moreover, it identifies specific actions related to pesticide management that can take child labour into account and reduce children's exposure to pesticides. It aims to build specific skills, depending on work-related responsibilities and tasks, by providing concrete ideas and guidance that can be applied in real life situations.

Business strategies and public-private partnerships to end child labour in agriculture

Child labour can be found at all stages of agricultural supply chains, affecting children, enterprise reputation, as well as rural and agricultural development. This course presents a number of business-oriented strategies to reduce child labour in agricultural supply chains, including in crops, livestock, forestry, fisheries and aquaculture. Protect children from pesticides!, FAO and ILO's new visual guide, provides an easy accessible training tool. It helps agricultural extension workers, rural educators, labour inspectors, and producer organizations in teaching farmers and their families how to identify and minimize risks at home and on the farm. Handbook for monitoring and evaluation of child labour in agriculture

The Handbook offers guidance and tools for assessing the impacts of agricultural and food security programmes and projects on child labour in family-based agriculture. In addition, the Handbook aims to sensitize agricultural programme staff on the importance of incorporating child labour prevention as a crosscutting issue in their planning, monitoring and evaluation (M&E) system and of systematically considering the potential positive and negative impacts of agricultural programmes on child labo ur. The Handbook furthermore encourages the user to identify good agricultural practices for preventing and reducing child labour in agriculture.

Guidance on addressing child labour in fisheries and aquaculture

Child labour is a major concern in many parts of the world and it is estimated that there are some 215  million child labourers worldwide. Junior Farmer Field and Life School Manuals for Trainers

Chronic youth underemployment and poverty can be attributed to young people’s limited access to skills development opportunities. To address this challenge, FAO has developed the Junior Farmer Field and Life Schools (JFFLS) methodology. JFFLS is an innovative approach that trains vulnerable rural youth in the agricultural, business and life skills needed to earn a decent living, and to become more productive and active members of their communities. This 16-module training material help to teach vulnerable children and young people about farming and how to take care of themselves.
