National Strategy to Promote the Health of Honey Bees and Other Pollinators 2015
In 2014, a presidential memorandum established a pollinator health task force in order to create a national strategy for pollinator health. In 2015, the task force released its strategy, which includes a research action plan, plans for expanding education and outreach, opportunities to improve public-private partnerships, plans to improve pollinator habitat, and harmonized guidance on assessing pesticide risks to pollinators. The strategy lays out specific goals: to reduce winter honey bee colony mortality to 15% within ten years, to increase the eastern population of Monarch butterflies to 225 million by 2020, and to restore or enhance seven million acres of land for pollinators over five years.
State-specific Managed Pollinator Protection Plans (MP3s)
In 2017, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) released their Policy Mitigating Acute Risk to Bees from Pesticide Products which included recommendations for individual states to develop managed pollinator protection plans. As of 2016, 28 states have created such plans.
EPA Pollinator Protection Strategic Plan 2008
Since 2008, the EPA has implemented a pollinator protection strategic plan. The goal of the plan is to promote pollinator protection with a particular emphasis on reducing the effects of pesticides on pollinators. The EPA aims to accomplish this through increasing their knowledge on the risks of pesticides to pollinators, improving risk management strategies, and increasing collaboration between governmental and non-governmental organizations as well as the public in order to address pollinator issues.
