Libya has deposited its instrument of accession to the Agreement on Port State Measures (PSMA) to prevent, deter and eliminate illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing.

The PSMA comes into force in Libya today, 5 December 2018, making Libya the fifty-seventh Party to have ratified the Agreement.

The fifty-seven Parties include the European Union which counts as one on behalf of its twenty-eight Member States.

The PSMA is the first binding international agreement to specifically target IUU fishing, by preventing vessels engaged in IUU fishing from using ports and landing their catches.

Libya is the fourth country from the nineteen in Near East and North Africa to have ratified the PSMA, after Oman, Sudan and Mauritania.
