FAO participates in Brazilian national seminar on IUU fishing

11/06/2021

The FAO Fisheries Global and Regional Processes Team (NFIFP) participated in a national seminar about illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing, organised by the Brazilian Aquaculture and Fisheries Secretary (SAP) of their Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (MAPA) and the Brazilian Navy.

The seminar, entitled “Seminário Nacional sobre Pesca Ilegal, não declarada e não regulamentada (INN) na Amazônia Azul”, was held virtually on 10 June.

It brought together different agencies involved in the fight against IUU fishing and presented the actions and initiatives being developed by them, including on monitoring, control and surveillance (MCS), to review the work that is being done in Brazil and to promote interagency cooperation.

FAO was invited to provide an international perspective to the fight against IUU fishing, presenting the different international instruments and mechanisms available. Particular focus was given to the FAO Agreement on Port State Measures (PSMA) and complementary tools including the Global Record and the Global Information Exchange System (GIES).

The work done supporting countries under the Capacity Development Programme was also presented.

Brazil underlined their commitment to conclude the process of accession to the PSMA and asked about the process to develop a National Plan of Action to combat IUU fishing.
