FAO assists the Gambia to implement the PSMA

21/11/2022

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has recently conducted an in-country interagency workshop and legal review in the Gambia, between 4 – 11 November 2022.

The workshop and review followed an earlier needs assessment workshop, held in summer 2022, to assist the country in strengthening its setup to implement the 2009 Agreement on Port State Measures (PSMA) and complementary international instruments to combat illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing.

The two-day in-depth legal review, conducted in collaboration with the country’s authorities, consisted in a series of bilateral meetings with representatives from key authorities involved in the implementation of the PSMA and other instruments, and regional mechanisms to combat IUU fishing and existing responsibilities as port, flag, coastal and market State. The resulting review report will seek to develop a series of recommendations to review and update the legal and policy frameworks based on best international practice.

The interagency workshop addressed a range of priority areas for the Gambia and had the dual focus of information exchange related with the implementation of the PSMA and flag State performance.

This activity was the second intervention in the country under the Port State Measures Support Project (GCP/GLO/1047/GER) funded by the Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development of Germany (BMZ) under the auspices of FAO’s global capacity development programme to support the implementation of the PSMA. A series of capacity development activities is planned in the Gambia until 2026 to strengthen the country’s capacity to effectively fulfil its international obligations as port, flag and coastal State to combat IUU fishing and to implement market-related measures in this regard.
