New manual of procedures for fisheries inspections presented in Senegal

A new format of the manual of procedures for a more efficient fisheries inspection process was presented in Senegal after substantial guidance was provided by experts of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).
FAO experts are supporting the country’s authorities through several actions aimed towards assisting Senegal in implementing the FAO Agreement on Port State Measures (PSMA) and complementary international instruments to combat illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing. The new manual of procedures, currently being developed by Senegal’s authorities under the guidance of FAO, will provide mean that fisheries inspectors will now have more effective monitoring, control and surveillance (MCS) tools to carry out their day-to-day work.
During a mission carried out between 24–28 February, FAO experts also studied current procedures that fisheries inspectors apply at port, to propose further recommendations on strengthening the inspection process when implementing the PSMA.
The same mission aimed to restart discussions on reviewing Senegal’s current fisheries law and updating the legislation to include provisions related to the implementation of the PSMA. During these discussions, the General Secretary of the Ministry of Fisheries expressed full political support for FAO’s assistance.
The mission to Senegal was funded by the Federal Republic of Germany.
