PSMA Global Capacity Development Programme information now online

Detailed information about the Global Capacity Development Programme, launched by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in 2017, in support of the FAO Agreement on Port State Measures (PSMA) and complementary international instruments, has been published in the official PSMA website.
The Programme is delivered within the framework of the Part 6 Assistance Fund of the PSMA. It assists States in different aspects of capacity development for them to better fulfil their responsibilities as defined by international law, in the implementation of international instruments to effectively combat illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing.
Through the information just published, States can familiarize themselves with the types of support FAO provides under this Programme, access resources developed and, obtain the latest information about all initiatives.
The PSMA Global Capacity Development Programme supports States through a structured approach based on three main pillars of work: the review and update of policy and legal frameworks, institutional setup and capacity, and monitoring, control and surveillance (MCS) means and operations. This is mainly carried out through a comprehensive in-country technical assistance approach, supported by an extensive training programme.
To date, more than 70 countries have received support from FAO through the PSMA Global Capacity Development Programme which has funding in excess of USD 37 million.
The published information also includes a record of the 13 international courses held in the period 2018 – 2024, and additional 9 courses which will be held throughout 2025. More information will be uploaded in due course in relation to additional courses.
The PSMA Global Capacity Development Programme is supported by resource partners such as the European Union, Germany, Iceland, Norway, the Republic of Korea, Spain, Sweden, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and the United States of America.
