FAO participates in Latin America regional workshop on the implementation of the PSMA

30/11/2025

Experts from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) participated in a regional workshop for Latin American countries in the Southeast Pacific, organized by the Permanent Commission for the Southeast Pacific (CPPS), on 17-18 November 2025.

The workshop, held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Peru, aimed to analyse the current status of the incorporation of the FAO Agreement on Port State Measures (PSMA) into national legal frameworks.

The Permanent Commission for the Southeast Pacific (CPPS) is an intergovernmental body, comprised of Chile, Ecuador, Peru, and Colombia, whose objectives include strengthening regional competencies in fisheries matters for sustainable development, supporting its Members in the ongoing development of the Law of the Sea.

During the workshop, FAO experts discussed illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing at the global and regional levels and the regulatory framework addressed by the PSMA, emphasizing the importance of States in properly fulfilling their obligation to exchange information through the FAO PSMA Global Information Exchange System (GIES).

A forum for dialogue and debate was established regarding opportunities for coordination among CPPS Members within the framework of the PSMA, during which the challenges and opportunities presented by the fight against IUU fishing for Southeast Pacific countries were discussed.
