© FAOAn expert from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) participated in a workshop in Argentina on combatting illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing.
The event was held on 3 – 5 September in Buenos Aires by the Subsecretariat of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources in collaboration with the Argentinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Trade and Worship.
During the workshop, Argentine authorities presented their national strategy to address IUU fishing within the framework of ongoing national and regional initiatives. Panel discussions covered political considerations, legal frameworks, monitoring, control and surveillance (MCS), and fisheries resource management.
FAO’s contribution included presentations about the FAO Agreement on Port State Measures (PSMA), international instruments to combat IUU fishing, and the PSMA Global Information Exchange System.
Authorities from Chile and Peru also participated and shared their experiences as regards the implementation of the PSMA, while The Pew Charitable Trusts conducted a training exercise simulating the impact of different MCS measures on fisheries.
The workshop gathered over 150 participants from national agencies, operators, and embassies.
