Despite the COVID-19 global pandemic, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations has been providing technical assistance to authorities in Ecuador in the drafting of an Inter-agency Decree that seeks the effective implementation of the Agreement on Port State Measures (PSMA) in accordance with the responsibilities of the different institutions involved.

The final draft was agreed today.

The Decree establishes clear roles to fisheries, maritime, port and customs authorities as well as procedures to ensure an effective fight against illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing.

The Decree is expected to enter into force in the coming weeks. Ecuador adhered to the PSMA in May 2019.

FAO is grateful to the European Union for its generous financial contribution to support this activity.
