Another 22 fisheries inspectors, this time from Asia, completed a three-week course organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in the new FAO PSMA Training Hub in the Republic of Korea.

The fifth edition of the FAO International course on Fisheries Port Inspections in support of the Agreement on Port State Measures, which forms part of the FAO fisheries training programme in support of the implementation of international instruments, was delivered in Busan, Asia’s biggest fishing port city, with the funding of the Republic of Korea, and the collaboration of the Pukyong National University and the Overseas Fisheries Cooperation Center.

The 22 inspectors, from Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, the Republic of Korea, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Timor-Leste, Tuvalu, and Viet Nam, followed an intensive course which included field trips to Busan Port and to the Busan Fisheries Monitoring Center as well as to fisheries research institutions and facilities. Besides lecture sessions, the participants also undertook a PSMA onsite inspection training session in a real-life scenario.

The organization of the course in Busan followed the organization of the same course, held in Vigo, Spain, a few weeks ago, from which another 16 fisheries inspectors from the Caribbean benefited.

Dr Matthew Camilleri, Leader of the FAO Fisheries Global and Regional Processes team at FAO Headquarters in Rome, said that this course is one of a kind and covers a broad spectrum of subjects related to the FAO Agreement on Port State Measures (PSMA) port inspections going from legal matters, to monitoring, control and surveillance, port inspections, exchange of information, and enforcement.

The FAO International course on Fisheries Port Inspections in support of the Agreement on Port State Measures is one of several training possibilities and other capacity development initiatives carried out by FAO under its global programme, to assist States in implementing the PSMA and complementary international instruments, and combat illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing.
