FAO international course held for the first time in Portuguese

26/11/2025

Sixteen fisheries government officials from 8 Member-States of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP) – Angola, Brazil, Cabo Verde, Equatorial Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, Sao Tome and Principe, and Timor-Leste – are attending a 12-day FAO international course on fisheries port inspections in support of the Agreement on Port State Measures, being held in Lisbon, Portugal.

This is the eighth time that FAO is delivering this course, which is being held in Portuguese for the first time.

The course forms part of the FAO Global Training Programme which supports the implementation of the FAO Agreement on Port State Measures (PSMA), contributing to national, regional, and global efforts to prevent, deter and eliminate illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing. Its delivery in Portuguese helps improve cooperation and coordination through sharing of technical knowledge, country experiences and best practices in the implementation of the PSMA.

The course was opened by the Director-General of Portugal’s Directorate-General for Natural Resources, Maritime Safety and Services (DGRM), by the Director of Cooperation of CPLP, and by a FAO officer.

The course is developed under a technical project specifically supporting member States of the CPLP.

Under this project, FAO translated and published training materials, reports, guidelines, and technical publications into Portuguese for knowledge sharing and capacity development including: Compendium of decisions, the PSMA, the Agreement to promote compliance with international conservation and management measures by fishing vessels on the high seas, the International Plan of Action to Prevent, Deter and eliminate IUU Fishing, the Voluntary Guidelines for Transshipment, the Voluntary Guidelines for Flag State Performance, theVoluntary Guidelines for Catch Documentation Schemes and the Voluntary Guidelines on Marking of Fishing Gear.

This is one of several training possibilities under FAO’s capacity development initiatives carried out by FAO to assist States in implementing the PSMA and complementary international instruments to combat IUU fishing. More information is available here.
