Cambodia fisheries personnel benefit from 2-week FAO training on fisheries law enforcement

Fifteen fisheries inspectors, regional resource personnel, and key staff from the FAO Cambodia office gained a better understanding of Cambodia’s legal framework and of key international instruments for the sustainable management of marine fisheries resources, by attending a two-week FAO course on fisheries law enforcement.
Facilitated by the FAO Development Law Services (LEGN), the training course was held in Siem Reap and Sihanoukville between the 14 – 29 November 2025, and formed part of technical assistance provided by FAO to the government’s CAPFISH-Capture work plan through the EU funded project “FAO complementary support to the Cambodia programme for sustainable and inclusive growth in the fisheries sector: capture component”.
The course provided participants with training on fisheries law, enforcement, evidence collection and management, and monitoring, control and surveillance (MCS). It helped them get a better understanding of Cambodia’s recently passed new fisheries law and how it applies in day-to-day scenarios.
The training formed part of a broader capacity-building initiative aimed at strengthening public sector competencies in fisheries management and promoting regional knowledge exchange. It also supported the FAO Strategic Framework 2022-31 and contributed to Cambodia’s progress towards SDG14, particularly targets 14.4, 14.5, and 14.A.
