Under the auspices of an FAO project co-funded by the European Union, FAO experts undertook a mission to Peru from 16 to 21 September 2019 to assist the country in improving its existing fisheries monitoring, control, and surveillance (MCS) systems and procedures.

This was a follow up to a previous mission that took place in April 2019 and resulted in the drafting of an interagency coordination decree, which is expected to implement mechanisms to prevent, deter and eliminate illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing.

The mission particularly aimed at assessing the status of approval of the above-mentioned decree and the accompanying rules of procedure, but also to identify potential ports to be designated for foreign vessels used for fishing or in support of fishing activities, as well as identify the need for any further specialized training.
