Agreement on Port State Measures (PSMA)

Follow-up visit to Saint Kitts and Nevis

21/06/2022

Under the Republic of Korea funded project TCP/INT/350/ROK, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nation's (FAO) Fisheries Global and Regional Processes Team and Development Law Service visited Saint Kitts and Nevis from 13 -17 June 2022.

The visit was a follow-up to a virtual needs assessment workshop held in October 2021.

During the visit, the team met with senior management of the Department of Marine Resources, the Department of Maritime Affairs, and a senior member of the Attorney General’s Chambers.

Pertinent issues of a legal, policy and technical nature in the context of the implementation of the FAO Agreement on Port State Measures (PSMA) and associated international instruments and mechanisms were discussed.

The team also took the opportunity to undertake field visits to ports and landing sites in both Saint Kitts and Nevis islands.

The last two days of the visit were dedicated to a workshop convened to review and validate the draft strategy and action plan developed during the virtual workshop.

After discussing and fine tuning the draft document, the nine participating national authorities validated the strategy and action plan to effectively implement the PSMA to combat illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing.
