The Russian Federation has, earlier this month, deposited its instrument of ratification to the 2009 FAO Agreement on Port State Measures (PSMA).

This happened during a virtual meeting, held on 5 February, between its Permanent Representative to FAO and UN Agencies in Rome, His Excellency V.L. Vasiliev, and FAO’s Director-General, Dr Qu Dongyu.

Thirty days after this date, the PSMA will come into force in the Russian Federation, becoming the sixty-ninth Party to the Agreement.

The PSMA is the first binding international agreement to specifically target IUU fishing, by preventing foreign vessels engaged in IUU fishing from using ports and landing their catches.
