FAO implemented the United Nations standard for fisheries information exchange

20/05/2025

FAO is now connected to the FLUX TL network. Network nodes have been implemented at FAO enabling the exchange of fisheries control information through the FLUX transportation layer (TL).

The Fisheries Language for Universal eXchange (FLUX), a fisheries information exchange standard developed under the UN/CEFACT framework, brings about many benefits for automated, secure, real-time system connections. FLUX ensures system interoperability by setting a standard for the information which is then exchanged through a purposedly built exchange mechanism, the FLUX TL.

This technology now enables FAO to take part in the automated exchange of information in the field of fisheries control based on the UN/FLUX standards implemented in a number of States and International Organisations. Such exchanges will be progressively implemented by FAO over the months and years to come.

The FAO Global Record of Fishing Vessels, Refrigerated Transport Vessels and Supply Vessels will start receiving vessel and licensing information through this mechanism. The Global Information Exchange System (GIES) of the FAO Agreement on Port State Measures (PSMA) will follow suit with the exchange of inspection reports with Parties using FLUX.

States or regional fisheries management organizations (RFMOs) willing to connect through use of FLUX can contact us at [email protected].

UN/FLUX is a UNECE/CEFACT project aimed at developing universal data exchange formats for use by fisheries control stakeholders. Its aim is to promote, facilitate and support the implementation of sustainable fishing standards on a global scale.
