SMALL RUMINANT POPULATION (goat-sheep): 5.933.000 - 403.000
EPIDEMIOLOGICAL SITUATION FIRST/LAST OUTBREAK: First PPR outbreak confirmed in March 1991. PPR has spread from year to year in the whole Country.
CONTROL ACTIVITIES: Since 2016 annual vaccination campaigns have been implemented but immunization coverage is still considered low. PPR National Strategic Plan has been drafted and validated in 2017 in accordance with the PPR Global Eradication Programme.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: 85% is traditional small ruminant house farming. Sheep farming mainly held by Fulani pastoralists (nomadic or semi-nomadic) while goat rearing is mainly held by indigenous people. There is a poor knowledge of modern breeding techniques with market channels very little developed.
