Congo
SMALL RUMINANT POPULATION (goat-sheep): 119.633 - 90.528
EPIDEMIOLOGICAL SITUATION FIRST/LAST OUTBREAK: First outbreak in 2005
CONTROL ACTIVITIES: Four PPR vaccination campaigns have been conducted so far between 2007 and 2015 and the incidence of the disease has been considerably reduced. Between 2010 and 2014 reported outbreaks decreased from 78 to 1. National Strategic Plan has been drafted in accordance with the PPR Global Eradication Programme.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Livestock farming system is mainly traditional.

Democratic Republic of the Congo
SMALL RUMINANT POPULATION (goat-sheep): 6.000.000 - 4.000.000
EPIDEMIOLOGICAL SITUATION FIRST/LAST OUTBREAK: Suspicious of PPR since 1960 but not confirmed with serology. In 2010: confirmed outbreak in the former province of Ecuador. From 2010 to 2017: PPR alert in all provinces.
CONTROL ACTIVITIES: Vaccination campaign is running from 2012. In the first year number of small ruminant vaccinated was 605.715 ( in Kwilu province); in 2013 have been vaccinated 642.330 small ruminant ( in Kwilu and Kasai provinces); in 2014 vaccinated 700.000 small ruminants (in Congo central, Kasai central and Maniema provinces). National Strategic Plan has been drafted and validated to meet 2030 PPR Eradication Plan with an Action Plan for the first 5 years (2017-2022) aiming to bring the Country at Stage 2.

Gabon
SMALL RUMINANT POPULATION (goat-sheep): 9.555 - 40.295 (data from FAOSTAT 2016)
EPIDEMIOLOGICAL SITUATION FIRST/LAST OUTBREAK: First outbreak reported in 1993 after the virus has spreads in different provinces between 2011 and 2015. Since its first outbreak no concrete measures have been taken and PPR is considered endemic in the whole Country. Veterinary legislation is outdated and PPR is not yet considered a notifiable disease therefore reporting an outbreak is not mandatory. For this reason the epidemiological situation is poorly understood with almost no data, no epidemiological research, no prevention and control program.
CONTROL ACTIVITIES: National Strategic Plan developed but no PPR vaccinations conducted to date.

Afghanistan
SMALL RUMINANT POPULATION (goat-sheep): ranges between 11.3 million and 13.3 million. 75% of the rural population are dependent on livestock for their livelihoods and much of the land is only suitable for livestock grazing, thus small ruminant production provides a significant contribution for food security.
EPIDEMIOLOGICAL SITUATION FIRST/LAST OUTBREAK: PPR is endemic in Afghanistan
CONTROL ACTIVITIES: the country is currently implementing activities that contain elements of both stage 1 and stage 2 of the PPR step-wise approach.

Burundi
SMALL RUMINANT POPULATION (goat-sheep): 2.489.304 - 352.722
EPIDEMIOLOGICAL SITUATION FIRST/LAST OUTBREAK: In December 2017, PPR was reported for the first time although it appeared that PPR might has been present in the country for a long before. More than 13.000 cases registered, 8.560 died (66 percent) in few weeks.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: FAO, the World Bank, IFAD and AU-IBAR supported PPR control. Two round of vaccination carried out with almost 82 percent sero-conversion.
