Book (stand-alone)The Islamic Republic of Afghanistan. Agro-Ecological Zoning Atlas
Part 1: Agro-climatic indicators
2019Also available in:
No results found.Agriculture is crucial for the national economy of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan. Adoption of new strategies for agriculture monitoring, rural land use planning, and management are urgently required to reduce hunger and poverty and to assure sustainable food and feed production for future generations. The availability of reliable information on natural resources and agriculture for its monitoring and analysis is indispensable to the development and implementation of such strategies. For this purpose the project “Strengthening Afghanistan Institutions’ Capacity for the Assessment of Agriculture Production and Scenario Development” (GCP/AFG/087/EC), funded by the European Union (EU), is implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock (MAIL) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). Within the context of this project, FAO and the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) are developing a National Agro-Ecological Zoning activity (NAEZ) in Afghanistan. This Atlas is the first of two books and provides the collected information and maps of the country based on the agro-climatic Indicators. -

The related outcomes that FAO foresees are: an established National Agro-Ecological Zones (NAEZ), the creation of an integrated database and information system, the national institutions' developed capacity in producing, mana ging, analyzing and using the outputs of the assessment to support evidence-based decisions in the planning and management of the agricultural sectors and natural resources. -

Assessing alternatives for future cropping systems
2021Also available in:
The leaflet presents the activities of the second component of the project “Strengthening Agro-climatic Monitoring and Information Systems (SAMIS)”. In collaboration with the Department of Agricultural Land Management (DALaM) under the Ministry of Agriculture (MAF) has, with the financial support of FAO Laos and technical support from the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) and FAO experts, produced the national level agro-ecological zoning (AEZ) mapping process. The AEZ aims to define the potential use of zones where crops can be growth based on climate, soil, crop cycle, and crop management practices, resulting in maps of suitability and potential yields. The maps have been generated using a software, called pyAEZ, produced with the project's support. The suitability maps for today and the future, using climate scenario as an input, are, in both technical standard and input data quality, state of the art. Lao People’s Democratic Republic is the first country, globally, to implement the AEZ system using national data and national capacity exclusively. The SAMIS AEZ delivery model has shifted demands for expertise to the regional and local levels. The AEZ allows policymakers to look ahead and adjust policies now to prepare for climate-related changes that will affect the prosperity of the country. Also, it helps to assess alternatives for future cropping systems and it guides establishing priority crop plan and future-proof land allocation to specific crop productions. Ultimately, the results from the scenario modeling will be uploaded to the Land Resources Information Management System (LRIMS).
