The COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown measures throughout Asia have had measurable impacts on trade flows, causing trade disruptions and temporary interruptions. Under COVID-19 lockdowns, cross-border trade either slowed or came to a halt due to border closures or direct import or export restrictions. International trade disruption also affected several countries, interrupting the flow of critical goods, staple foods, agricultural inputs and equipment needed for domestic food production, SDGs processing, and consumption. In the short-term, following COVID-19 lockdown, trade flows were more volatile for fresh produce, live animals, livestock products, and fresh or dry fish, all of which experienced a drop in demand and cancelled exports. This action sheet presents FAO's COVID-19 Response and Recovery Programme's key priority area of "Trade, intra-regional trade and food safety standards" for Asia and the Pacific.

The COVID-19 pandemic is having a severe global impact across the world and while some economies have sufficient resources to address their needs, many other countries are not as fortunate. Initial humanitarian support was firmly directed at the health dimensions of the crisis. However, food and nutrition security and associated agriculture and food systems livelihoods have rapidly increased in importance. Some of the most food-insecure countries in the world are in the Asia and Pacific region and these are the central focus of work at the regional level. Attention has been drawn recently to rising levels of acute food insecurity in Afghanistan following a large-scale drought that is concurrent with the pandemic. And this is only one example of the simultaneous and compounding crises that exist in many countries, which is expected to cause further food security deterioration over the coming months. The targeted regional action is built around FAO’s urgent global plan designed to save lives and livelihoods through a coordinated set of critical interventions. This action sheet presents FAO's COVID-19 Response and Recovery Programme's key priority area of "Addressing the impacts of COVID-19 in food crisis contexts" in Asia and the Pacific.

The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed the weaknesses and vulnerabilities in food systems and revealed opportunities for increasing their sustainability. “Building back better” post COVID-19 must occur at multiple levels. Seeds are among the first links in the food chain. FAO defines seed security as ready access by rural households, particularly farmers, to adequate quantities of quality seed and planting materials, adapted to their agro-ecological conditions and socio-economic needs at planting time, under normal and abnormal weather conditions. Ensuring seed security is a critical and recurrent issue in disaster response and recovery and investing in seed development is the first step in the provision of diverse diets. This action sheet presents FAO's COVID-19 Response and Recovery Programme's key priority area of “Food systems transformation” action sheet for Asia and the Pacific
