Supporting the International Symposium on Fisheries Sustainability
18/11/2019
Marine and inland fisheries are crucial to food, nutrition and livelihood security. However, despite significant successes, the proportion of marine fish stocks fished within biologically sustainable levels continues to decline, while inland fisheries are affected by the growing demand for fresh water.
On the occasion of the International Symposium on Fisheries Sustainability (Rome, 18−21 November 2019), have a look at some of FAO’s publications supporting the Symposium, whose aim is to strengthen the science and policy interplay in fisheries production, management and trade, based on solid sustainability principles, for improved outcomes in practice.
- International Symposium on Fisheries Sustainability: Strengthening the science-policy nexus
This publication displays all information related to the different sessions of the Symposium, including sessions description, list of panels, and bibliography. - The State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture 2018. Meeting the sustainable development goals
The 2018 edition of this biennial report emphasizes the fisheries and aquaculture sector’s role in achieving the 2030 Agenda and measuring progress towards these goals. - FAO yearbook. Fishery and aquaculture statistics 2017
This edition contains global statistics on capture fisheries, aquaculture, commodity production and trade, apparent fish consumption and employment within the industry as well as issues and trends related to the reported data. - Impacts of climate change on fisheries and aquaculture. Synthesis of current knowledge, adaptation and mitigation options
This report indicates that climate change will significantly affect the availability and trade of fish products, especially for those countries most dependent on the sector, and calls for effective adaptation and mitigation actions encompassing food production. - Review of the state of world fishery resources: Inland fisheries
This review presents the contributions of inland fisheries to food security, including ecosystem services, biodiversity, employment and inclusive growth. It also suggests ways to improve estimates, including household consumption surveys and habitat yield models.
