Fishing is considered one of the most hazardous occupations. Every day hundreds of fishers are injured and more than 200 fishers die at work. Fishers – most of whom work small-scale – often face dangerous conditions, at high risk of accidents or injury

The World Maritime Day is for FAO an opportunity to celebrate the commitment and dedication of millions of seafarers, fish workers and fishers working in commercial fisheries. Regional fisheries bodies and their role in improving safety and decent work on fishing vessels

The report indicates that most regional fisheries bodies noted that decent working conditions in fisheries have not been addressed. They recognized that the development of an action plan would be beneficial to mainstreaming safety and decent work in the management of the fishing fleet.

World review of capture fisheries and aquaculture insurance 2022

According to this report, the number of fishing vessels covered by marine hull insurance is estimated at around 450 000 worldwide; and over 95 percent of the 2.3 million motorized small-scale fishing vessels operate uninsured.
