Variety groups by origin and use

Depending on their origin and intended use, varieties and ecotypes of currently cultivated quinoa can be divided into:

Enhanced or commercial quinoas

Those that have been bred or subjected to genetic enhancement procedures at research stations.

Native variety quinoas

Those that have been bred by local famers or native or indigenous communities. These can be grouped as

  • White small-grain quinoas;
  • Sweet quinoas with low saponin content;
  •  Bitter quinoas.
