Afghanistan | FAO visits and listens to vulnerable communities in southern Afghanistan

Apr 2022

An FAO delegation headed by Daniele Donati, Deputy Director of the Office of Emergencies and Resilience, and Fabrizio Cesaretti, FAO Deputy Representative in Afghanistan, visited farming and herding communities in several districts of Kandahar Province, Afghanistan.

The aim of the visit was to assess and monitor various FAO interventions, including cash for work to rehabilitate community water infrastructures, wheat cultivation support, and livestock protection, as well as to listen to the needs and challenges of vulnerable farming communities. Some of these communities live in areas that had been formerly hard-to-reach or inaccessible due to conflict and were only recently assisted for the first time in years.

These farmers and herders need agricultural inputs like seed and animal feed to maintain their agriculture-based livelihoods. Over the next year, the FAO programme is responding to these needs, increasing seed production and availability, supporting livestock production and ensuring feed and fodder availability, as well as providing support to improve irrigation and the water sector.
