FAO in Egypt: Understanding the MERS virus to prevent spillover from animals to humans

Mar 2022

Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) is an emerging health threat that can be fatal. The virus is thought to spill over into humans through contact with infected dromedary camels. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), through its Emergency Centre for Transboundary Animal Diseases (ECTAD), has been supporting Egypt to generate knowledge about the epidemiology of MERS-CoV through studies and surveillance. By better understanding the virus, countries can make more effective decisions about how to prevent it spreading from animals to humans.
