Empowering women and youth in Somalia’s fisheries sector for a food secure future

To curb unemployment among the youth and women in Somalia FAO, trhough the project. No Piracy: Coastal Communities Against Piracy (CCAP) funded by the European Union, trained youths and women in coastal cities of Mogadishu, Bosaso and Hobyo on specialized fishing.

The project aimed to provide sustainable employment for youth from communities on the Indian Ocean coast of Puntland, Galmudug and Mogadishu, who are at particular risk of recruitment into piracy, and simultaneously to increase food production from untapped and renewable fisheries and pastoral resources. 

Through the project, FAO trained hundreds of youth and women on fish handling and processing, how to maintain boats and hwo repair engines. The project has reached a total of 1100 households, contributing to the growth of Somalia’s promising fishing sector.
