Third RegLitter Asia Regional Task Force Workshop
The RegLitter project, falling under the umbrella of the OceanLitter Progamme of IMO, aims to prevent and reduce sea-based marine plastic litter (SBMPL) within the Asia region. To achieve this goal IMO and FAO implement the project together and partner with seven countries from Asia, namely India, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Timor-Leste, Viet Nam and Indonesia.
In the framework of the RegLitter project, the Third RegLitter Asia Regional Task Force Workshop will be held at Kochi, Kerala, India from 8 to 12 December 2025. The meeting will highlight National Action Plans, legal frameworks, regional cooperation, and data-driven approaches to tackle sea-based marine plastic litter. It will also provide training, promote twinning activities, and explore collaborative opportunities across Asia.
The objective of this workshop is to action some of the regional cooperation proposals that were developed during the Second Asia Regional Task Force Meeting that took place in Hanoi, Viet Nam in March 2024 and the Virtual Asia Task Force Meeting held in April 2025. In particular, the Third Asia Regional Task Force Workshop aims to:
- Enhance capacities of participants on the ratification and implementation of the international instruments and conventions relevant to sea-based sources of marine plastic litter.
- Enhance understanding of the importance of data relating to sea-based sources of marine plastic litter, how it can be collected ship-side and shore-side, and what is available and missing on regional and national levels.
- Enhance participants’ awareness of sea-based sources of marine plastic litter legislative and data/research activities run by Strategic Partners in their regions and identify opportunities for collaboration and cooperation.
