Training Workshop on Monitoring and Protecting of the Right to Adequate Food in Nagarkot, Nepal

In the context of the project "Integrating the Right to Adequate Food and Good Governance in National Policies, Legislation and Institutions", a training workshop on monitoring and protecting the right to adequate food was held in Nagarkot, Nepal on 7-9 November 2012. The training workshop marked the beginning of activities in Nepal under the project. It was convened jointly by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Nepal National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), in collaboration with Food-first Information and Action Network (FIAN) Nepal, the Nepal National Women Commission and the Nepal Justice and Rights Institute (JuRi-Nepal). 

The overall aim of the training workshop was to enhance knowledge and skills of the 26 participants working in the field of monitoring and protection of the right to food, namely advocates, staff and activists, from academia, the NHRC and civil society organizations (CSOs) in understanding, monitoring and protecting the right to food in Nepal. The training workshop addressed the participants on fundamentals of the right to adequate food, including national and international legal standards, the relation of the fundamental human rights, the notion of the progressive realization, rights-holders responsibilities, duty-bearers obligations, the dimensions of food security (availability, accessibility, and adequacy) and the Right to Food Guidelines. It also provided conceptual clarity on the most common myths and misconceptions surrounding the right to adequate food, on monitoring, event-based and indicators-based methodologies and cycles to monitor the right to food. Lastly, the training workshop dedicated half a day analyzing experiences of the work of a national advocate on monitoring violation and denial of the right to adequate food through courts (justiciability).

At the end of the two days, the resource people from FAO and the NHRC helped participants develop strategies and follow up actions to apply the knowledge and methods acquired during the training workshop in their work on monitoring the right to food in specific regional contexts.
