Towards the 10th anniversary of the adoption of the Right to Food Guidelines

News - 21.03.2014

Dear Right to Food Supporters,

2014 marks ten years since the adoption of the “Voluntary Guidelines to Support the Progressive Realization of the Right to Adequate Food in the Context of National Food Security” (Right to Food Guidelines) in 2004. In its 39th session held in October 2012, the Committee on World Food Security (CFS) agreed to have a 10 Year Retrospective on the progress made in implementing the Right to Food Guidelines (RtFG) during the plenary of the 41st Session in 2014 (CFS 39 Item VIII, para 21d).

The next Session of the CFS in October will represent a privileged platform to discuss the different dimensions of the implementation of the Guidelines, look back at the progress made over the last ten years, review the lessons learned and best practices, identify the gaps and challenges and discuss the way forward.

In preparation of the Session, FAO is leading a series of activities to raise awareness of the Guidelines and the right to adequate food, including the preparation of 7 Thematic Studies on important issues guided by the content of the Right to Food Guidelines; a Synthesis Report capturing the main findings of the Studies for the CFS session; and a Technical Dialogue on 3rd of July aiming at determining how to better focus the background provided by FAO for the multi-stakeholder retrospective review, in order to give a comprehensive but concise overview of the 10 years achievements, the challenges and the key lessons learned.

The findings and recommendations from these activities will help lay down renewed impetus for further work.

To actively participate to the debate and give your contribution, we invite you to take part in the Right to Food Forum, a new online platform hosted by FAO through its Global Forum on Food Security and Nutrition, aiming at facilitating open discussions on key issues related to the right to food.
