Briefs on the right to food in Guatemala and Nicaragua

News - 11.06.2015

Caritas Guatemala and Caritas Nicaragua presented in Managua and Guatemala City a study on the implementation of the Voluntary Guidelines to Support the Progressive Realization of the Right to Adequate Food in the Context of National Food Security (Right to Food Guidelines) in both countries. The work is the result of a joint effort by Caritas Nicaragua, Caritas Guatemala and Caritas Spain, as well as several public and private institutions working on the right to food. It stems from the campaign One Human Family, Food for All, launched by Caritas on Human Rights Day in December 2013.

The well-structured brief is published at a very opportune moment. It includes a number of clear and very useful frameworks for anyone working on the right to food in Guatemala and Nicaragua, and it could serve as an inspiration for similar analysis in other countries.

Also in Guatemala, on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the National System for Food Security and Nutrition (SINASAN), the ten years of the Right to Food Guidelines as well as the upcoming revision of the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals, the Social Collective for the Right to Food published its Alternative brief on the right to food in Guatemala, published annually since it started its activities in 2007.

Both briefs complement one another and underline the determination with which civil society works on the right to food and contribute to its monitoring.
