Objective / Goal |
Enhancing resilience and social cohesion among youth, while simultaneously improving their livelihood stability, requires innovative strategies to broaden their access to sustainable employment opportunities. To this end, the project piloted various employment schemes in Mauritania, including rapid temporary initiatives and medium- to long-term programmes. Through research and assessments at regional level, the project also studied the socioeconomic triggers of youth radicalization and youth migration with the aim of preventing potential negative coping mechanisms. Furthermore, given the extreme vulnerability of the region to climate change, a strong emphasis was given to the promotion of green jobs and green practices in agriculture. |
Partners | G5 Sahel Secretariat, governments, local authorities, producer organizations and youth organizations. |
Beneficiaries | The primary beneficiaries of the project were rural youth and government stakeholders. The youth engaged in the project have shared the knowledge and skills acquired with their families and peers, benefiting their rural communities. |

Impact |
Capacity development was a key component of the project. Young women and men, as well as national institutions tasked with supporting them, have strengthened their skills and capacity to access and generate decent and green employment opportunities in agrifood systems. Specific capacity development was provided not only through different employment schemes in Mauritania but also through a regional learning route organized for participants from Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Mauritania and Niger. In Mauritania, the project benefited over 200 rural youth in the short-term employment scheme and 390 youth enterprises in the long-term employment scheme (50:50 gender ratio). As a spillover effect, more than 1 970 indirect beneficiaries were reached in both schemes. Youth agribusinesses are still growing in the regions of Assaba, Brakna, Hodh Ech Chargui, Hodh El Garbi, Gorgol, Guidimakha, Tagant, Trarza and Nouakchott. The approach also addressed the triggers of youth radicalization and youth migration. Through regional and national fora, more than 80 youth were provided with a safe space for expressing their needs, their wishes, and their grievances to their governments’ officials, becoming agents of change in terms of economic growth in their countries, as well as agents of peace.
